Yoga teachers each have their own unique teaching styles, which is completely natural. What you learn and practice shapes how you teach—no one can cover everything or master every approach.
Many people start teaching with a mindset of “sharing”—meaning, I think this is great, so I want to share it with you.
However, when we take a step further in our thinking, we realize that beginners, because they trust their teachers, often accept what they’re taught without much question. They may think, If the teacher says this, I should give it a try.
For new yoga teachers working with absolute beginners, it’s like a high school student teaching elementary school students—it’s more than manageable. But as time goes on and you learn more, you also become more aware of your own limitations. You begin to realize that every person is different, and you can’t rely solely on your limited experiences to teach an endless variety of students.
This is why ongoing learning and refinement are essential. Deepening your expertise—whether in yoga anatomy, working with different ethnicities, age groups, and athletic backgrounds, exploring yoga philosophy, therapeutic practices, or understanding various physiological systems—are all valuable paths of growth. As you continue to refine your knowledge and accept that you are not all-knowing, you will be able to guide your students toward the right path without bias. This is what it means to be a responsible teacher.
Yoga teaching is about guiding, educating, and helping students find clarity. While you can start with the intention of sharing, you must also take responsibility for what you share—ensuring that different practices are introduced safely and appropriately to those who need them.
By doing so, you can build a sustainable teaching career with confidence and peace of mind.
Let’s continue to grow together.
